Introductions of one another to begin the session
Things to think about:
- Because our group’s listserv needs so much prodding, is it better to disband?
- Does ILI serve our purposes? Are we all on ILI?
- What purpose does LIC serve for SUNYLA? Should we be a working group rather than committee?
We can work on names (through a contest?), but here’s a suggestion: Lib Instruction Users Group (LIUG)
There are lots of opportunities to make this committee what we want it to be. Let's start by looking at LIC’s charge and contemplate questions. Do we need to reword the charge as it does not include the term, Information Literacy?
Where else do we get our info? 3 R's, LOEX, WILU, etc.
What would we like to see within this group?
- new, innovative ways to teach
- create a newsletter (Winter & Summer to allow for time to read & reflect before semesters begin)
- to include conference reports
- enforces deadlines (RL: unclear?)
- brief wiki write-ups (weekly?) to share what we’ve each been doing with instruction for the week – can serve as ideas for newsletter articles
Irina (Albany) and Heather (New Paltz) will shepherd a sub-committee
- develop a research agenda
- write more publications (RL: unlcear?)
- keep e-communication active using LIC listserv, wiki, new SUNYLA website-- Communication Committee, Rudy Leon to Chair
- an online suggestion box would allow for anonymity – hopefully the new SUNYLA website allow for this – Bonnie Swoger will look into possibilities
- develop mini-conferences or gatherings to discuss pertinent issues-- Professional Development Committee, Kim Davies Hoffman to Chair
- organize an annual or bi-annual conference dedicated 2 IL instruction where sessions could be lengthened for more interactivity. Mini immersion?
- This is a long term goal, down the road
- perhaps employ ARLIG’s format – panels devoted to a specific issue where panelists represent different campus categories – this would allow us to hear different perspectives, struggles, and triumphs and panel sessions would lessen the burden on 1 person alone
- coordinate more group presentations - easy to get volunteers when each is only responsible for 10-15 min of presentation (Comm/PD together?)
- schedule open mtgs at SUNYLA/LISUG/CIT for LIC (Rudy)
- create a mentoring or development committee w/in LIC (ProfDev't)
- develop teaching partnerships a la U of Wisc and New Paltz, but SUNY to SUNY rather than within our own libraries
- reach out more to library school students -- Logan Rath will Chair, and liaise with Member Devleopment
- develop a mentoring program with lib school students
- coordinate visits to librarians' classrooms
- create a list of librarians willing to mentor & match up w/willing students
- devise a program where students shadow librarians @ SUNYLA
- take advantage of SUNYLA grants to provide funding within LIC for national conferences (Awards committee, no chair)
- recipient of funding will need to give back in some way - newsletter write-up, mini workshop – we will need to develop a set of requiremts for fellowship
- talk more about emerging technologies-- emerging Technology Committee, Bonnie Swoger to Chair
- discuss ways to better manage our time
Decisions:
Change from Committee to User Group. Hold contest to name User Group
- look over bylaws to determine how to make this happen (RL)
Create subcommittees to ensure that we remain vibrant, active, and vital to SUNY informaiton literacy librarians
- Subcommittees will consist of several active people
- Subcommittee appointed chairs/point persons agree that if they feel too burdened by the work, it will stop being done. This is to reinforce the concern that the committee remain meaningful. If one person does all the work, we will make the causal connection that the group does not find that activity useful.
Brainstorming about what we would like to see the group do lead to the enumeration of subcommittees

- caveat: some of these committees may considerably overlap with other inititives in SUNYLA (students, emerging tech); chairs will want to determine whether LIC needs are best met by lising with othe groups or creating these subcommittees
The User Group will hold an open meeting (probably a preconference time slot) at each of the times that SUNYLA generally gathers in large numbers: CIT, LiSUG, SUNYLA annual
Preliminary goals of the committees

- manage listserv and wiki and web-based communication

- committee will determine length and format of newsletter, quite possibly to be digital only
- one major purpose of newsletter will be "reporting back" from conferences, especially non-SUNY conferences
- note from Rudy: it would great if each of the committees had a column in the newsletter?
- Additional Members:
- look into feasibility of regional IL meetings, one day workshops, etc
- possibly liaise with conference organizers about InfoLit tracking?
- investigate other ways the user group can support professional development for information literacy librarians within SUNYLA

Emerging Technology in Information Literacy and Library Instruction (Heather)
- liaise with LiSUG about emerging technology in library instruction
- Information literacy is a major deficit in library education. This committee will work to make connections with students in the library schools and let them know what we can do for them
- POssibilites include:
- develop a mentoring program with lib school students
- coordinate visits to librarians' classrooms
- create a list of librarians willing to mentor & match up w/willing students
- devise a program where students shadow librarians @ SUNYLA
- will work with member development to ensure we aren't duplicating their efforts
Awards (no chair yet)
- one idea that came up was that we might be able to help support some travel to the bigger national conferences, with an included obligation to somehow report back to the user group. Awards committee will look into the feasibility of doing so, and establish criteria for selecting and awarding monies, as well as amount, and how reporting back might happen
- The group will have to determine how this is different than SUNYLA's Professional Development Grants Program, or how it can fit into that committee if they are too similar in scope to differentiate.
